Proud Uncle Strikes Again

For those interested in the future of American drama, check this out:

It's about an evening of readings at Theatre of the First Amendment, a Washington, DC-based company, featuring excerpts from pieces from their First Light Development Program, which is a mentoring program for high school and college student playwrights.

You'll note that one of the young writers is Sarah Congress, who is, among other more impressive accomplishments, my niece.

Suffice to say that I think she's a talent to keep an eye on...

What's Hot on

One of the features on the nytheatre i for the past year or so has been the "What's Hot" list, where I show the most popular (i.e., most read) reviews on for the past week.

Thanks to the excellent technology available to me here at blogger, I am introducing a new and improved version of "What's Hot"! It's on the sidebar at the right (it's there right now--go ahead, take a look). It's a little list of the top five most popular reviews on, and it's being updated every day, more or less in real time. So for those who want to keep their fingers on the pulse of NYC theatre, here's a handy tool that will keep you in touch with what readers are interested in.

Please let me know your thoughts about the new version of this feature.

Physical Theater Recognized!

Our friends at Parallel Exit, who inspired the addition of Physical Theater Listings to, have been recognized by the Drama Desk today for their excellent show, Cut to the Chase. It was nominated for "Unique Theatrical Experience." (Suggestion to my colleagues at Drama Desk: maybe you should add a physical theater category next year!)

Congratulations to Mark Lonergan and Joel Jeske, the guiding forces of this delightful show. (My review of Cut to the Chase is here.)

A shout-out, also, to Arian Moayed, who is one of the co-authors of Waterwell's play The Persians which is published in my anthology Playing with Canons. Arian is also a Drama Desk nominee, in the Featured Actor in a Play category, for his work in Masked.

the nytheatre i has a new home

If you're a little surprised at the new look and feel of the nytheatre i, rest assured that you're in the right place.

I have had to move the nytheatre i blog to a new location, following some kind of security compromise on the old location. I've brought the blog to

I have not migrated the old posts and comments; we're going to start anew here.

I will be updating the blogroll soon! Thanks for bearing with me.

For now, please update your bookmark if you haven't already--I don't want to lose of any of the great folks who have been reading the "i" over the past years.

We've added several new features to the home page of, which I hope will make it more useful and valuable to our readers.

  1. There's now a "teaser" list of upcoming new productions that will start performances within the next few days.
  2. There's a section where we post upcoming benefits and fundraisers for indie theater companies.
  3. Indie shows that have recently been reviewed on now automatically display on the home page.
  4. Indie shows that are offering ticket discounts on now automatically display on the home page.

I hope you'll check out the new and improved home page. Let me know what you think about it.
